about
This is the story of a young Jamaican nurse who fought against racism in Canada in the early 60's when a builder refused to sell her a house because of the Colour of Her Skin. She took him to Human Rights and won. She'd had enough. This is my mother's story.
lyrics
Bah Bah Da Bah Bah Da Bah, Bah Bah Da Bah Bah Da Bah
She left privilege and palm trees for the land of ice and snow.
Somewhere new to stretch her wings with space to grow.
Path was defined by the colour of her skin
Down south was segregation. Up north seemed promising.
Judged by the Colour of Her Skin, Young woman takes a stand, far from the Caribbean.
Bah Bah Da Bah Bah Da Bah, Bah Bah Da Bah Bah Da Bah
Cold winds from across the prairies, in the winter of 52
Young woman all alone, far from her Jamaican home.
Oh Canada Red & White, Black skin still fights for rights
Freedom has it's conditions, in the land of the northern lights
Judged by the Colour of Her Skin, Young woman takes a stand, far from the Caribbean.
Bah Bah Da Bah Bah Da Bah, Bah Bah Da Bah Bah Da Bah
Bah Bah Da Bah Bah Da Bah, Bah Bah Da Bah Bah Da Bah
She fought for what was right and just, she fought because she'd had enough. Doors shut politely in her face, doors shut because of race.
Would not be defined, by the closed minds. Justice was hers to find.
Judged by the colour of her skin. Young woman takes a stand, far from the Caribbean.
Bah Bah Da Bah Bah Da Bah, Bah Bah Da Bah Bah Da Bah
Bah Bah Da Bah Bah Da Bah, Bah Bah Da Bah Bah Da Bah
She fought for what was right and just
She fought because she'd had enough
